Absolutely beautiful beaches, crystal-clear water, abundant sea life and friendly people who always greeted us with a smile. Our good friend Jean joined our group for a week of sailing. We travelled 113 nautical miles and saw some unbelievable sights! Meeting up with Jean after loooong travels!! MADAGASCAR The iconic and ancient baobab embodies the complexity and resilence of this unique place. Madagascar left us awestruck by the beauty of the natural world and it's fragility in human hands, particularly hands toiling for a basic existance amdist extreme poverty and political instability. We spent the first few days at the Reniala Lemur Rescue Center near Toliara in Southern Madagascar. We prepared food twice a day and delivered it to enclosures where lemurs progressed through stages of rehabilitation before eventually being released. CLICK PIC FOR LINK Dr. Grace even got to perform wound care with the local vet! During a night walk, we came upon this incredibly adorable little creature known as the Tenrec which is endemic to Madagascar. William befriended the local kids through the universal language of football (aka soccer). After the rescue center, we began a week of travel across the country stopping at several national parks and reserves. This was when the intensity and completeness of deforestation really began to sink in. We drove through miles and miles of desert-like landscapes where lush forests once grew. This process is due to a mix of extractive industries combined with the ever-present practice of burning the land for agricultre and to stimulate grass growth for Zebu (the local "cow"). The result is an apocalyptic landscape of brown earth covered in ashes. Each national park stood out as a stark reminder of the biodiversity that has disappeared. Amidst this harsh landscape, the resilent and diverse Malagasy people live out their lives with ever-present smiles. Unfortunately, it is an uphill battle, as poverty rates in Madagascar are among the highest in the world due unstable leadership and inadequate structural resources. Monsoon storms in the capital Antananarivo bring quick flooding and slow traffic to a crawl. Our amazing guide Nico invited us to his home in Antsirabe where we got to meet his father who has a created a thriving business making cheese and yogurt in the ground floor of their home. Reniala houses the Ring-Tailed Lemur. We asked to meet King Julian but we're not granted a royal audience. The amazing Sifaka lemur with its hilarious dancing walk Our good friend Orfa has joined us for 2 months. Here she is soaking up the cool water in Isalo National Park. Unfortunately, Eric and Grace were at home this day with our soon-to-be-well-known "tummy troubles"! William looking out with Ranomafana National Park in the distance. The iconic Revanala or Travellers Palm During the night, all sort of new animal came out including loads of chameleons and the adorable Mouse Lemur. Our good friend Jack joined us for the trip and was constantly off in the forest seeking out the animals that our guides had missed. In this case, he had no qualms scooping us this large boa. The Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko The Giraffe-Necked Beetle In Antsirabe, we got to experience our first-ever human-powered ferris wheel. You can see one of the two people perched on the top right. They would swing from bar to bar to get the ferris wheel moving and bring it to a stop. At the airport saying goodbye to our guide and new friend Nicko. If you are interested in travelling Madagascar, we recommend him. SPAIN Maria (from Madrid) studied abroad in Minnesota. In the same high school as Daniela. Thick as theives for 1 year, connected for a lifetime, and finally reunited after 21 years. PURE MAGIC Arrived in San Sebastian to this incredible apartment with breathtaking views. Walk to the beach, to coffee, to the market, to pastry, to pintxos galore... Stay here! CLICK PIC FOR LINK Tucked in the interior of the buildings are clothing lines easily accessible via the kitchen window (where the washing machine lives). Eric called it his "litchen" (laundry-kitchen). It was bitchen. We happened to arrive during the Internal Film Festival. SS was full of energy! Our first taste of Pintxos in San Sebastian. Pintxos (pronounced peen-chos) are small plates of delicous food that are shared and eaten frequently while standing. Eat a few, have a drink and move on to the next bar for more! With the last name Young, we're immortal, right? Morning surf lesson! Post surf SNAP of William and Mateo Look closely. Last night out with Maria while Jimena babysat Morning reflections and so much sadness leaving this beautiful slice of the world and Daniela's dear friend. Arrived in Santander to Maria's family home where her parents, Mateo and Merche, awaited us. Inpromto full-on gourmet lunch. Wine included. Walnuts drying in the sun on the second floor. FRANCE How is this work of art edible? Traveling this far to eat the French pastries was worth it. Always a playground. Oh dear. Grace wanted to try something different so when she was presented with the option of mint syrup for her drink, she went for it. Poor choice. She literally drank the entire cup of mouthwash so as not to offend the already off-put French server. The French win when it comes to ambiance, the smell of cigarettes, delectable pastries, terrible coffee and the ability to walk on cobblestones in stilettos. Our little home for the week in Toulouse. We don't recommend it so we won't attach the link! Vibes were off. But we loved the novality of the library toilet! Can not choose. In part because they all look amazing and in part because we can't order in French. LOL We were not flowing in the city. We needed some time in open air. So Eric found WamPark. No torn ligaments for the 40+ year olds and PURE fun for all. Great play day in the sun and away from the city. We (adults) could walk the Toulouse streets for days. It's a museum of beauty! In Europe, we have yet to see a dryer (ie: something that dries your clothes). They are extint over here. So Eric (our laundry-man) hangs our clothes to dry for 2 days and then irons. Loved a touch of rain on moody French afternoon. Grace finding the right composition for a future watercolor painting. So many 10/10 food options The windows, the flowers, the streets... Slay. Always walking in unison. a la moda. Last package of macrons! :( Last pastry in front of Cathedrale Saint-Etienne. Little did we know our uber would cancel due to construction and we'd be sprinting to our train moments later. Checklist as we depart - do we have our stuffies!? Man on tran studying La Vie En Rose music. Loved this flash of a moment. Uber, train, taxi, rental car and, voila! Arrived in the incredible mountain town of Laruns. GO THERE! Bonus - it's a stop on the Tour de France (stage 5). Mountains, nature, bikers, hikers, local markets. 55 Euro a night AirBNB. Yep. Stay here. CLICK PIC FOR LINK Walk from our house to the local plaza for the biweekly market. Wait. Seriously? Patagonia is sold here?! Our first French friend, Marc. He shared stories of love and loss and so much wisdom. We met up with him later in our stay for more connection. Fresh. Everything fresh. Laruns weekly market on Thursday and Saturday Sweet new friend who wanted to practice English and show us her towels. Hike out our front door to a waterfall a few miles up the mountain. Hiking snap Puppy we named "Buttons" who joined us for the entire hike. We were well rewarded for our efforts! Worm on trail and question bucket for worldschool "how many times can a worm be cut and still live independantly?" William "they look to perfect to be real" We took a Pyrenees open air alpine train (Petite Train D'artouste) to a high mountain lake. Worth it for a 1/2 day activies, incredible views and crystal clear water in upper lake. CLICK PIC FOR LINK. Petite Train D'artouste Upper lake in the Pyrenees. Gorgeous! Lunch time at world school. Love driving here. We hiked 5.5 km on the famous GR10 trail that runs through the Pyrenees to an upper refuge and spent the night. The hut served us dinner, wine, breakfast and a bedroom with 6 other hikers. Such an experience! Kid's crushed. They had a rule that parents could never pass them on the trail and we couldn't keep up (and we were carrying all the stuff!). Last kilometer! Pic d'Mici behind us (aka Jean-Pierre) View at the refuge hut. Cozy accomodations at the top of the mountain! We each got a tote for our room Grace interviewing Rosie, a lovely and animated worker at the hut. Reflections to inspire reflections World schooling Every day (and night) a "parade" of sheep would be escorted, with bells and loud hooves, through the town. How capitalism and modernity hasn't reached these precious villages remains a mystery. We felt like we were living in history. Everything seamed simple, pure and authentic. Bedroom view. Meeting Marc, our new French friend, for an afternoon visit and William's French interview. We cherish learning from the people we meet in each country. Thank you Marc! Sun setting on our last evening. Au revoir France! ENGLAND With our dear friends from studying abroad and their kiddos, we now hold the record for fastest completion of the escape island! The most delicious traditional Pakistani meal with Ghaniah's lovely family. Message Daniela if you want her mom's dal recipe! Reconvening with our old flatmates 20 years after we lived together in London was absolutely fabulous! And to watch our similar-aged kids play at the park? Icing on the cake! Grace, Rafi, William & Levizah. View of the aviaries of the Botanic Gardens in Birmingham near Zaki and Ghaniah's house. Impressive and massive library in Birmingham. Library of Birmingham holds Shakespeare's collection. We loved learning common saying that originated from his genius. Afternoon at the Exchange (part of the University of Birmingham). Excellent cappuccinos, mediocre hot chocolate, and a fabulous free place for world-schooling. Fancy dinner for fancy friends! Lavizah and Grace. After uncle Steve's steak, William proclaimed this sirloin from The Ivy his favorite. Daniela and Ghaniah... never enough time together! After we left London (2002), Zaki visited us in San Diego. He showed us his album. Blast from the past! Zaki's photo of Daniela and Eric c.2003. Babies! Worldschooling in a free museum in Birmingham. Another plot point for the historical timeline. Earth's bday... 4.5 billion years ago. A hard and tearful (Daniela) goodbye to dear old friends and we're off to Haselmere. Travelling again... First long overground train of the RTW. Even Leila (Grace's lovie) gets tired of trains, planes and automobiles. Arrived in Guildford to meet up with our friend we met while traveling in Costa Rica years ago. Yay Jack!! Quick walk through breathtaking gardens and the Guildford castle before heading to Jack's house for supper with his family. Did we get the kids? Haselmere, England. Jack's backyard - Complete with badmidton, his puppy Cooper and a fabulous BBQ dinner. Jack's dad is a local firefighter and gave us an exclusive tour. We got to practice using the hoses and tried (unsuccessfully) to lift the heavy tools used to cut open cars. Every little boys' dream. AND a great world-schooling opportunity to learn about Newton's 2nd law of physics. :) Matt: our new hero. Haselmere museum (again... donation based) is an absolute MUST if you find yourself in this sweet little town. Bee hives behind us. [LINK ON PIC] Jack (zoologist) knows all and is the most fun teacher for the kids! A day with Jack would not be complete without time submerged (literally) in nature. Seriously?! We hiked a trail through trees and across a lake and ended up at this little pub tucked in the forest. On the move. Again. Arrived at our friends, the Fews, in Cobham and immediately found ourselves drinking in the 'bubble of trouble'. Paula took Daniela on the most gorgeous 10km walk through the woods near their house. In England, swans are real. We found a clock! Eye-Eye! Introducing the kids to the magic of Lion King, London style. Lion King! Post show bike ride to Waterloo station. Grace interviewing Paula about England for world-schooling. Too cool for school. William got to ride with James to brunch in this old thing. Dream come true for William... his first real Premier League (soccer) game. Although we were at West Ham's stadium, he was silently cheering for Man City. Man City won 3-1!!! Football, UK style! Grace crushed in James's golf simulator. William interviewing James for world-schooling. And... catching up on football/soccer, William's favorite pastime. Forever grateful for the warmth and incredible hospitality of the Few family. Packing up, yet again. Another tearful goodbye. Off to France. IRELAND Overnight flight to Ireland. Kids crossing the pond for the first time. Arrived at our 1st destination, a farm in Kiltale (centeral Ireland). We couldn't believe how impossibly GREEN it was! CLICK PIC FOR LINK Sweet roomates at the farm. The owner, Mary (LOVED her!) instructed us to pick and eat anything we wanted from the garden and orchards. Soup and salad for dinner. Cooking in keeps us well within our budget... especially when the ingredients are free! Breakfast at the farm and living auntie Ket's motto: hydration is key (especially after a red-eye flight and 7 hour time change)! Kids learned about the feudal system and plotted the Trim castle on their historial timeline (1180 AD). Running allowed. WHO KNEW!? William is the GOAT (greatest of all time) at milking goats. We milked the goats twice a day. After we milked the goats, we used their milk to bottle-feed orphan baby goats. Wild blackberries are everywhere in Ireland in late August. Read Sean Heaney's famous poem about them. CLICK PIC FOR LINK. Farm owner, Micheal, taught the kids Irish words and all about the Irish Catholic tradition of cemetary Sunday [CLICK PIC FOR LINK] All in a day's work. After the farm chores... racing around tire tracks. We had guiness and played dice with new friends at Marcie Regan's Pub, apparently the 2nd oldest pub in Ireland. Lesson from Fionnan on hurling, one of Ireland's native Gaelic sports. The landscape is indescribable. Also, there is no adequate description for how to make these roads fit two cars side-by-side. Travel Tip! Rent manual cars and only choose one driver to save $. Arrived at destination 2: Roundstone. One of western Ireland's best kept secrets! It is a quaint fishing village full of charm. Our home is the white one. [CLICK PIC FOR AIRBNB LINK] Coffee shop next to our house, overlooking the harbor. Worldschooling in session. The nearby pub (4 doors down) serves drinks to be enjoyed along the stone wall overlooking the harbor. This is where Daniela and Eric met lovely new friends! Rare sighting of sibling affection. Day on the Atlantic fishing. Dinner and a heafy day at sea! Day trip fishing. Loving the words of wisdom on the stone wall near our home in Roundstone. Dog's Bay near Roundstone. Absolutely worth a visit! Rolling green hills, grazing cows, protected dunes and a beautiful sloping white beach. A day well spent at Dog's bay. We built a well-decorated sandcastle for the sheer fun of it, fully knowing it would soon be washed away. This is what the RTW is all about! Worldschooling: architecture and shell discovery. Dog's bay had loads of limpet and razor shells. Connemara National Park. Entrance is free and memories are priceless. We hiked to the top of Diamond Hill (~6-7km), did a lesson in poetry, created Haikus, and enjoyed the breathtaking views. Not a bad start to our hike Connemara National Park. Views from hiking Diamond Hill. Kids taking in a snack and the endless landscape of Connemara national park. Daniela and Grace completing the last false summit to join Eric and William at the top. Summit! Look closely. Yep. Those are sheep joining us for some playtime at the park. Grace painting in our airbnb in Roundstone while her cakes were baking in the oven. Travel Tip: to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiple by 9/5 and add 32. Ireland in August: castles, the color green and blackberries. We met the most lovely Irish couple, Derik and Maria. They invited us on their sailboat and taught us so much about Irish culture, history and humanity in general. Grace interviewing Derik for world school. After asking about Ireland's typical foods, the conversation evolved into an excellent history lesson on the potato famine. Currency Exchage Time! $5 Bermudian = 4.65 Exchange with Patty in Roundstone. Afternoon in Galway. Notice the Sean Heaney quote on the wall: Noli timere [Latin] "do not be afraid" Galway - so much music and energy! Farewell for now Ireland but we are not leaving the UK just yet... off to England. BERMUDA Thanks to their auntie Nicolle, the kids were lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bermuda Aquarium. They fed the sharks and turtles and helped train the seals. One of their favorite days! Smooches! Worldschooling begins in the boathouse. Family dinner of fresh caught fish: yellow snapper (William) and wahoo (uncle Justin). We missed cousin Connor (already in CO for college). Fabulous day out on The Joker (Daniela's brother's boat) visiting a sunken ship, cliff jumping, snorkeling, petting moon jellies, singing Tay-Tay and chillin on the bow. Nothing better. GRACE! Total fear buster. Bravely attempted and crushed a front flip with her role models by her side (cousin Kate and her daddy!) William started the RTW with $5 and is calculating exchange rates and converting his original currency around the globe. First exchange: USD to Bermudian. Exchange rate: 1:1. World schooling sailing/boating lesson. Keep your scope at least 5:1 and don't let the anchor knick the boat when you pull it up. :) Quick yellow snapper catch during a lazy day at sea. William inherited the lucky O'Keefe fisherman touch! Homeschooling: History lesson at the Hamilton Fort built in the 1860s with a very special tour guide: auntie Nicolle. The kids loved the moat that has turned into a tropical forest.
